Usually a dental prosthodontics is applied when tooth tissues are damaged; one or more teeth are absent, replacing the old, inaccurate or non-aesthetic tooth restoration. Aesthetic prosthodontics performs a slightly different function – it is usually done in the area of the front teeth in order to adjust their shape, color, or close the gaps between teeth.
The significance of prosthodontics has changed when metal-free ceramic or porcelain started to be used intensively. These materials are slightly displacing metal from dentistry. For those who care about the great looks, applying aesthetic prosthodontics in the area of the front teeth, metal-free ceramic or zirconium oxide restorations are recommended. This type of prosthesis solves aesthetic problems and do not cause gum diseases, as the gums tolerate zirconium oxide surfaces better.
As the prosthetic materials have especially improved in recent years, it became possible to create perfectly esthetic teeth. Previously metal ceramic was extensively used in prosthodontics. Although these prostheses are enduring, but they are impervious to light, so the tooth does not look natural. Moreover, in the neon lights the crown of this type looks as if disappeared. Metal exposure to certain tissues often induces a variety of oral problems – gingivitis, tooth color change, even a change in taste, allergies.
Metal-free ceramic dentures, zirconium oxide crowns have appeared quite recently, but quickly became popular. As they are permeable to light, teeth look very aesthetically and naturally.
Modern dental materials used for esthetic dental restorations, have characteristics that are very similar to natural teeth. Metal-free ceramic, zirconium oxide prostheses look great, their color is perfectly adapted to the natural teeth, and they are durable, wear- resistant, respond to changes in temperature. Today, instead of crowns or metal frame bridges, aluminum or zirconium oxide are suggested. These highly durable materials can be used in all dental prosthesis groups: for single crowns as well as for bridges.
Metal-free ceramics, zirconium oxide restorations provide naturalness and restore the color so precisely that even the most accurate eyes will not notice the difference from real teeth. In addition, it is very bio compact material as the body tolerates it well, side effects or change of gums are not observed.
The type of aesthetic prosthodontics is chosen according to the patient’s dental problems. Prosthodontics may be applied by metal-free ceramic, zirconium oxide laminates (which are commonly used for front teeth), crowns, which, if needed, can be used for all the teeth. Molars are usually restored by zirconium oxide or aluminum onlays. If a tooth is missing, or for certain medical reasons or patient’s self-determination it is not possible to use implants, teeth are restored by a bridge. In particular, when there is a high arch defect, we use removable dentures – dentures or arch supporting prostheses.
